How to choose safe pots and pans for your kitchen

Good morning everyone!

I'm Carlotta Gagna, founder of Traininpink, and today I'm talking to you about a topic that has nothing to do with training or nutrition, but is nonetheless crucial for our health: the choice of materials for pots and pans, that is, the cooking tools you use on a daily basis.

Did you know that some materials can release toxins and heavy metals into food?

These substances can accumulate in our body and contribute to health problems such as respiratory issues, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and, in the long term, even liver and kidney damage.

That's why it's important to make conscious choices about materials for a safer kitchen!

Let's look together at how to choose carefully and reduce these risks in the kitchen!

Avoiding Toxic Materials

Let's start with the materials that would be best to avoid altogether, even if many brands label them as "safe" thanks to not-so-transparent marketing campaigns. Let's not be fooled!

Teflon or non-stick

Non-stick pans are often coated with plastic polymers such as PTFE, PFAS and, in the past, PFOA.

When these pans are heated, they can release toxic fumes both into the air and directly into food.

Even though PFOA has been eliminated from most Italian products, older or imported pans may still contain it. Watch out for "PFOA-free" products too - equally questionable materials are often used instead. It's best to avoid non-stick pans altogether.

Aluminum

Aluminum is a neurotoxin with no benefit to our body, and it has been shown that it can release particles into food, especially when heated with acidic foods. Best to avoid it.

Copper

Uncoated copper can release dangerous amounts of metals into food.

Even common nickel or tin coatings can be problematic, so it's best to avoid this material as well.

Safer Materials and How to Use Them:

Let's now move on to the materials considered safer.

Here too, however, it's important to remember that no material is perfect, so use each type of cookware in the most appropriate way.

Stainless Steel

  • Pros: durable, low maintenance, even heating.
  • Cons: can release heavy metals such as nickel and chromium when used with acidic foods.

Tip: choose Italian-made stainless steel for greater safety.

Cast Iron

  • Pros: durable, long-lasting and retains heat well.
  • Cons: can release excess iron, especially with acidic foods, and requires careful cleaning.

Enameled Cast Iron

  • Pros: does not react to acids, even heating.
  • Cons: very heavy, the enamel can chip with use.

Glass

  • Pros: Non-reactive, therefore does not release chemicals.
  • Cons: Extremely fragile.

The Ideal Cookware for Every Type of Preparation

Let's now look at which materials to use for each type of preparation, to make the most of their benefits and avoid potential risks.

  • High Temperature (searing or frying): Stainless steel, carbon steel and cast iron are perfect for high temperatures, such as cooking meat. Personally I prefer stainless steel for safety, but the other two materials, if properly seasoned with oil, also work very well.

  • Braising/Sauces: Enameled cast iron is the best choice for braising or cooking sauces, as it does not react with acidic foods. Just make sure the enamel is intact.

  • Sautéing: Stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel can all work well, as long as you are not using acidic foods.

Conclusion

As we have seen, no material is perfect, but if we choose the right type of cookware for each cooking method, we can minimize exposure to toxins and heavy metals.

Our kitchen can become an even safer and healthier place, if we pay attention to these small details.
